Ike Hobbs

I met Ike Hobbs when he worked at the video arcade next to the Daily Grind, in Champaign, Illinois and was stunned when he cut loose with a several-minute monologue - delivered in his high-speed lyrical signature verbal style - that included a closing phrase of "...guaranteed not to rust, bust or collect dust." He may have been referring to the machines but, in retrospect, it might have been about himself. We played "Battlezone" - a primitive 3D wireframe shootist game - on acid quite a few nights. That started the beginning of a very long friendship.

There was one night - about 7 years later - when we'd scaled a building together after a long, long night of high-speed talking and jabbering and wild gesticulating...which we continued from the roof. In the middle of one exchange one of his wild arm movements spelled the end of a peaceful evening for a window. He stopped, stunned, and I think I may have said something to the effect "It might be more fun to paint on it next time, huh?"

I won't take credit for this one - painting on glass, and extending the artwork beyond the picture plane -  (of many) directions his work has taken over a career of prolific and stellar output, but think that these unforgettable days and nights threw both of us off into new creative directions/adventures. Regrettably Mr. Hobbs can't be present at this Paris show, but one of his glass works can.

Ike has pieces in a number of backwater venues - e.g. The Whitney Museum, The Harold Washington Library, etc - as well as in many private collections, and has had too many exhibitions to list of here.

J’ai rencontré Ike Hobbs à Champaign illinois à l’Arcade Video près du « daily Grind ». J’ai été médusé quand il est parti dans un monologue de plusieurs minutes avec cette vitesse d’élocution qui est sa signature vocal pour finir avec cette phrase « …garantie anti poussière, antirouille, sans merdouille. » Il faisait allusion à la machine mais avec le recul il pouvait aussi parler de lui. Nous avons souvent joué à « Battlezone » (un jeu primitif en 3D de tire) sous LSD et ce fut le début d’une longue amitié.

Une nuit, 7 ans plus tard nous avons escaladé un immeuble après une longue soirée de discutions et jacasseries a bâton rompu avec force gesticulations ; discution que nous avons continué sur le toit. Pendant ces joutes verbales, son bras dans un mouvement passionné a fracassé la paix et le silence de la nuit en cassant une vitre. Il s’est figé et j’ai du dire quelque chose comme « La prochaine fois tu ferais mieux de la peindre…. »

Ces journées et ces nuits inoubliables nous ont tous deux nourris et donné l’inspiration pour de nouvelles directions avantureuses et créatives. Sa peinture sur verre prolonge l’œuvre d’art au delà du plan de l’image – une des multiples directions qu’a prit son travail prolifique et parfois novateur - Malheureusement M. Hobbs ne sera pas présent à Paris pendant l’exposition, mais son travail sur verre sera là.

Ike Hobbs a plusieurs œuvres exposé aux Etats Unis dont Le Whitney Museum, La grande bibliothèque de Harold Washington.Et de nombreuses pièces dans des collections privées.
